Chapter 12, Question 3

One topic on this section I found rather interesting was the topic about testing the hypothesis. After completing the observations and data collections, testing the hypothesis is was comes next. The hypothesis is a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation. When I was in middle school and I was learning about the scientific method we were told the goal is to prove your hypothesis wrong and for me that just did not make any sense, because wouldn’t you want to be right from the beginning? The hypothesis can be very time consuming. It was always okay for having a wrong hypothesis, because that is what science is all about and having experiments to prove it shows the work and that is what makes science so great. One time I thought I lost my phone, my hypothesis was that I lost it in my room, and then I found it in my car. So my hypothesis was wrong.

Chapter 12, Question 1

"You are driven even harder than usual today — and it might result in some seriously interesting results! Make sure that you’re pushing yourself hard, as rest could result in anxiety."

I was born on March 22, which makes me an Aries. Today, my reading said that I am extremely driven and that my determination will bring some interesting results. In my opinion I do not believe in horoscopes. I started off my day being lazy in my room and I had no plans of accomplishing anything important today. This alone, makes me not believe in horoscopes. I do not understand why people take their readings seriously. Just, because you were born on a certain date, does not mean the stars will determine how your life will unfold. I believe everyone should live his or her life the way it is without an explanation from a horoscope. I do agree with what my attitude of an Aries is, because I am very stubborn however I still would not live my life around my horoscope reading and neither should anyone else in my opinion.

Chapter 11 Question 3

One topic that I found rather interesting was the idea of social networking and how it acts the mass media. Reading about now Obama’s election back in 2008 and using sites like Twitter to broadcast a certain idea was surprising to me. Thinking how new that social networking is and how much of a difference it is making for the future. Social Networking is being used for advertising.  I have a friend who has an online clothing store and just is pretty popular on Twitter and she uses her fame to her advantage and promotes her clothing store to make the most sales. That is an example of how someone is taking advantage of all the social networking resources. Schools use it to help raise awareness or to inform the students of a particular cause. Social Networking has played a big impact in the way mass media is changed and how important it is on all of our lives.

Chapter 11 Question 1

The media has a major impact in the today’s society. The crazy thing about this is that it can really change how a society views certain ideas, because of the media. One way the media uses their power is with celebrities. The media has a way of showing the public how a certain celebrity acted and it could completely far from the truth, but because it was in a magazine it always them to have the sold. On the other hand, the media can uses news and make it entertaining for people.  Again, no matter what is being said, people will buy into it just because they saw so. Sometimes there is a bias and the media is able to broadcast something a certain way.  Although I watch the news all the time for current events, I have to be careful that there is not a bias, because they do a great job at convincing people.

Chapter 10 Question 3

Something that I found interesting in this section was the part about Fallacies in Marketing. Especially the part about the fallacy of popular appeal, which basically is the idea that everyone is doing it so you should do it too. Many people tend to follow what “in” Fashion does a great shop at making trends happen and make people want to buy it.  For example, Hollister gives off the vibe, if you buy our clothes you will be more of a beachy type of person and many people buy into that idea and buy all their clothes from there. A lot of companies like to use celebrities as a form of wanting people to buy things. If “Kim Kardishian” has an iphone, then everyone is going to want to buy one only because she has one. Many people only want to fit in so they spend whatever it takes to do so and many companies know this.

Chapter 10 Question 2

In the section of chapter 10, the section on “Perspectives on Advertising and Children” is about the way business market and sell their products with the use of advertisements directed to little children and regardless of how unhealthy the products may be, they are being advertised. This section had two very different opinions on this subject. Wootan, a director of nutrition said that the big businesses should not have so many unhealthy have being played to the public. She goes on and says that most people now are not aware of many nutrition facts that they can easily be persuaded into anything this big businesses are saying and more often than not you will by what is being advertised and that is what Wootan says is the problem. Loidice on the other hand feels that freedom of speech is a basic right we all have and that regardless of anything every, we can say what we want.
