Chapter 8, Question 2

Sister Helen Prejean believes that the death penalty is wrong and goes off the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Many Christians today would actually be in favor of the death penalty. It is kind of funny how people who go the teachings of the bible would be in favor of this. I believe that people should not decide who gets to live on die in this world. It is not our job to judge others. Regardless the person who committed a horrible crime did in fact commit it, it should not be other people’s place to just say their life should end because of it. Not only do I believe it is morally wrong, but it is also very costly on top of it. Having to spend a lot of money to kill someone? That seems a bit too much in my opinion. Lastly, killing someone is giving that person an easy way out instead of letting them think about what they have done for the rest of their life.

  1. I find that very had to fathom as well. How do these "Christians" follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and go on and support an immoral act such as the Death Penalty? I know that speaking in political terms, a man that has committed murder shall have his own rights of life the he has been give should be taken away. Now is that for us to decide or Jesus Christ? I believe that if we really were to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ then we should really let him decide the fate of the one who has committed a crime such as murder. I agree with you on this topic. But I believe that many people's opinions change once they are put into the situation but it is our job to stay strong and keep faith.
